At present, we have two Skeet Ranges, a Trap Range and a Rifle Range (postings at 25-50-75-100-150-200-250).
*NOTE* Trap/Target loads only on these ranges
We offer "open shooting" on Thursday nights, starting at 6:00, and on Sundays from 12:00 to 5:00. Shooting Season begins the 2nd week of April and ends the 2nd week of September. We do have lights on our trap and skeet ranges for night shooting.
Here are a few pointers I found on a shooting website that gave these statistics for better skeet shooting results. At Station #1, give the high house zero lead, the low house one foot. At Station #2, give the high house zero lead, the low house 1-1.5 feet lead. At Station #3, give the high house 3-4.5 feet lead, the low house 3-4.5 feet lead. At Station #4 and #5, give the high house 3-4.5 feet lead, the low house 3-4.5 feet lead. At Station #6, give the high house a one foot lead, the low house zero lead. At Station #7, give the high house 4-8 inches lead, the low house zero lead. At Station #8, give both house zero lead, shoot fast and swing. Always keep moving the gun, even after you've shot.
We offer private shoots for small groups by appointment on weekends and other evenings, contact us for details.
Whether you are "open shooting" or League shooting, the cost per round is $4.50 for members, $6.50 for non-members. Ladies and students are discounted to $3.50 and $5.50, respectively. Prepaid shooting cards are available at a 10% discount with a current membership. Memberships are $20 a year.
We do have a Rifle Range featuring three shooting benches positioned. This was recently renovated by the Sibley County Sheriff's Department and allows them access to an area where they can practice their exercises. This is available to any current member.
Firearm Safety Classes are taught every summer by qualified personnel. These gun training sessions are sponsored by the Winthrop Game Protective League and the Winthrop Veteran's Club. For information, go to the D.N.R. website at http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/
League Shooting starts the beginning of June and runs until the end of August. We reserve Wednesday nights for League night, starting at 6:00. Each team needs 5 shooters with one alternate. Team participation fee is $50. This year we will be shooting 8 times and scoring the best 7 scores.
The Club has fundraisers througout the year. We start with our annual Fish/Smelt Fry in early spring followed by our June Fun Shoot. In August, we have a Pow Wow Fun Shoot. In between, we offer ATV Training, a weekend camping experience for the Girl Scouts and a day of shooting for area F.F.A. students.
Our Clubhouse may be rented by anyone for hosting their special occasion, whether it be an anniversary, family reunion, or graduation. The dining room seats 100 people, with additional seating available in the bar area. The kitchen has a range, large cooler and freezer, glass plates and cups and some cookware for your convenience. **Please be advised that since this is a shooting range, Club members are allowed access to the grounds to use the rifle range. If you are uncomfortable with this situation, please call Chris at 320-583-1152.
Club members--while you have the privilege of using the rifle range during private gatherings, please use good judgment when shooting your guns. Be aware of where all the children and pets may be at any given time. If the host of the party is uncomfortable with you shooting on the grounds, please be courteous and conscious of their concerns. Should you have any problems with this, please call Chris at 320-583-1152. Thank you.
All work done at the Winthrop Game Protective League is all volunteer. Tom A. has been mowing our expansive acreage for the past 8 years. Jean A. has been the person in charge of cleaning the Club House and maintaining the supplies. Steve S. will now be receiving the requests for the rentals of the Club House. We have made a 6-foot wide, graveled path leading to the lake. There is a bench and a table available for your enjoyment of watching and listening to the wildlife on the lake.
